What Is The Definition Of Stock Volume?
Stocks refer to the shares of ownership that a publicly traded company has in the stock market. Stock volume on the other hand refers to the total number of shares that change hands in the stock market over any given period of time. In most cases, the stock volume is measured at the end of each trading period which could be a day.
Measurement of the volume is done is various ways, one of them being that, the number of shares that have been traded in that period are all counted physically. The volume data is recorded for individual stocks, exchange traded funds, options and other indices as a whole. The end report for the volumes is normally given as a range between the highest and the lowest trading seasons.
The other method of determining the volume is through identification. This is where the volume is presented on a chart of IBM. The volume in many charts appears on the X-axis as a horizontal histogram, just below the price data. This is an easier way of keeping track of the stocks as they change hands. The figures usually go up to tens of thousands.
The other method used for reporting the stock volume is by looking at the significance. Since volume reflects the supply and demand of a commodity, a stock with low volume is seen to represent high liquidity and hence relatively significant risks and opportunities. When the volume is low, the difference between what the buyers are willing to pay and what sellers are asking for is usually high, hence low change of hands. This translates to very high fluctuations in either direction.
