A stock exchange is the place where several stocks and securities are traded via online or other mediums. Thousands of stocks change hands each day and their prices keep on varying due to variable supply and demand conditions.
There are around twenty stock markets open nowadays. The most widely known stock exchange is the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE.) The NYSE is called the “Big Board” and draws the highest volume dollar trades every day. The NYSE reminds of figures of women and men flooding the floor buying and selling stocks by shouting over the floor to grab a good price.
Stock exchanges no longer have huge crowds crying to sell or buy shares. The trading is managed via computing machines. People can buy or sell stocks from their home. The whole system has become reliable and efficient.
Every public company has stocks that can often tell how good a company is doing. Because of this, an overall fall in the stock market can be an indicator that the economy is doing poorly. On the other side of the spectrum, a good surge in the stock market is often an indicator of the economy doing good.
The stock exchange has been there for centuries. It started in France centuries ago. Most of the trading was managed by banks. Agricultural communities traded their debts using this system. The advanced conception of company stocks was developed by the Dutch in the 17th century.
The advanced concept of the stock market started to catch on in the early 18th century. After the initial success, several stock exchanges opened everywhere and several companies benefited from them.
It wasn’t until the recent mass globalization that the number of stock markets started to decrease.
