Can You Sell On EBay Full Time?
If you have done even a cursory amount of research into self employment or starting your own business, chances are you have seen and read a lot about people that have quit their jobs, or had been laid off, and found phenomenal success simply through buying and selling things online through eBay. But is it true? Is it possible to generate astronomical money through an eBay business? Can a normal person even earn an average “full time” income from such a business? It sounds a little implausible, yes, and many of the claims of seven figure profits seem like something straight out of a late night television infomercial. And while some of the claims are at least dubious, the short answer is that, yes, you can successfully bring in at least a “full time” income, if you plan appropriately, come up with a low cost, iron clad business model, and opt to sell products that are in high demand. Here are a few places you need to start to consider setting up your online eBay business.
YOUR SUPPLIER MUST BE CHEAP
If you plan to sell a particular product that you yourself will not be manufacturing, you need to line up a supplier that will give you this product at enough of a whole sale discount that you can still turn a profit by selling it online. Remember, to, that online customers already expect to get some kind of deal on eBay through you, so what ever your pricing structure is, it needs to take into account both supplier costs and how much less you need to sell below MSRP retail to move your product. If you pay attention to little else while structuring your company, perform due diligence when selecting and locating a supplier for your product, and pay specific detail to costs.
IF YOU ARE NOT GOOD WITH NUMBERS, LEARN
If you are not good with keeping accounts and crunching numbers, either learn, purchase some good quality financial planning software, or consider consulting a licensed Certified Public Accountant to help get everything in order for you before you launch your business. Hiring an accountant on a one time basis should not bust your profit margins, and can help get your business on the fast track to eBay success.
NEVER STOCK A LARGE INVENTORY
Whatever you do, if you are running a business exclusively through eBay, do not stock a large inventory. The costs associated with stocking a large inventory almost always end up sinking your bottom line into the red, especially if your business hits a road bump and you experience several weeks or months of being unable to move your product.
AVOID SELLING ‘FAD’ ITEMS
Along with the previous item, avoid stocking and selling “fad” items such as Beanie Babies or WebKinz, because unless you stumble onto a supply of them for free, they will not be popular enough for long enough to return a good profit.
