This Spring marks the arrival of a new era on Spike TV with Coal as reality powerhouse producer, Thom Beers, takes viewers deep down into the earth for an unprecedented look at one to the world’s most dangerous and compelling jobs — coal mining. The one-hour series is set to premiere on Wednesday, March 30th at 10PM/9c with a first season order of 10 episodes. Coming from the man behind the Emmy Award winning Deadliest Catch, Ice Road Truckers and Ax Men, the new original series Coal explores the vital American industry through the eyes of Mike Crowder and Tom Roberts, part-owners of Cobalt Mine in Westchester, West Virginia as well as the area’s hard-working miners, families and community members. Crowder and Roberts face pressure every minute of every day to not only keep the mine up and running, but also to keep their workers safe in a highly dangerous environment where one wrong move could prove deadly. The duo leads more than 40 machine operators, foremen, electricians and coal truck drivers in one of the most dangerous workplaces on the planet, underneath the mountains of Appalachia. Crowder and Roberts are loyal family men who use the support of their loved ones to tackle the daily demands of the mine. Roberts’ own mining career spans more than 45 years in which he has seen his share of accidents and knows that any mistake a mile beneath the earth’s surface can spell certain disaster. Blending the very heart of Americana and the truly dangerous, Coal is set to create a new standard for reality television. Stay tuned to Spike.com in the weeks ahead for more stories, videos and photos of Crowder and Roberts, Westchester and the Cobalt Mine, and sharpen those pick axes as Coal comes to Spike this March 30th. She said the series will be “an eye-opener” for many. She said it will not attempt to get into any debates over energy policy or environmental issues; the focus is on the men and the role that coal plays not only as an economic lifeline for communities in Appalachia but as the backbone of the American economy.

From where he lives in this Tazewell County town, Jerry Edwards says every job is about an hour away. That’s why he and his 28-year-old son, Jerry Jr., jumped at the chance to make good money working at a coal mine about an hour and 20 minutes away in McDowell County, W.Va. But it’s not a typical mine. There, everything happens on camera. Edwards, a foreman at the Westchester Mine, is among those featured in “COAL,” a new reality series on Spike TV, created in the vein of “Ice Road Truckers” and “Deadliest Catch,” two popular shows about people with tough jobs. The series chronicles the day-to-day struggles of the miners and a small company, Cobalt Coal. The show premieres Wednesday and the first episode sets up the scenario: Not only is “COAL” about “a timeless battle of man vs. mountain,” it’s a story of two businessmen taking a big gamble, opening a mine that could make lots of money or go broke. The CEO is Mike Crowder, of Bristol, Va., who has a business background in computers. The president is Tom Roberts, from Kingsport, Tenn., who, with 40 years of experience in the mining industry, has wanted to own a coal mine all of his life. Telling coal’s story Crowder, whose mine opened less than a year ago, said the main reason he’s doing the show is for the men to have a legacy for their children. “We’re a coal company; we’re not an entertainment company,” he said. “The show just happened.” While Crowder said he’s not projecting any revenue from the show, he hopes the publicity will build shareholder confidence for the company, whose stock is worth about 13 cents a share. “We think American audiences will be as captivated by it as we were,” she said. “I think if anything what happened with the Chilean miners last fall, it stirred a worldwide interest in mining, and we think that it’s really going to hit a chord with American audiences.”
