Buying and Selling Penny Stocks
So you’ve decided you want to trade stocks. Now what? Well before getting to technical analysis and what to buy or sell ask yourself a few questions –
· What is your risk tolerance? Think of trading and investing as a business. All businesses have overhead costs and expenses. In this case, bad (losing) trades would be an example of a business expense. And you don’t want any of those expenses to explode so before entering any trade, think about how much you are willing to risk on this position. Some traders may risk 2-5% while other more aggressive traders may put on 15-20%. The important thing is to put on only as much as you’re comfortable with so that you can sleep well at night.
· Secondly technical analysis includes many oscillators ranging from moving averages that show the trend of a stock to head and shoulders patterns that show possible topping formation. The goal here is to look for some of the oscillators defined below and in the Chart Patterns Article to see what you prefer.
Now that you’ve found a strategy you like, let’s go over some fundamental orders when buying and selling stock.
· Buy To Open (BTO) – This allows you to purchase a given amount of stock you’ve designated, at a given price. A few things to note, the exchanges generally prefer to deal with easy numbers, so when buying chose a multiple of 5 or 10 like 50 or 75, instead of 66 shares. The commission will be lower and you’ll probably get filled on your order more quickly.
o You can enter a buy at the market price (market order) or your own price (limit order). The market price is whatever a seller is willing to sell the stock for and is slightly higher than what other buyers are willing to pay for the stock. For example, if buyers want to pay 3.45 for XYZ and sellers won’t sell below 3.48, a market order will get you in at 3.48.
o A limit order says that you won’t pay any more than the limit price you have set in the order. The good thing here is that you’re not paying up to get in, the bad part is that, you’re not in the market unless someone sells it to you at that price. In a fast moving market, if you place a limit order and the market takes off before someone sells you stock at your limit price, then you just missed the move. This may not happen often, but it’s worth noting.
· Sell To Close (STC) – Selling your stock, also known as closing out or covering your position, means that you are selling you’re stock to a buyer. You will receive a profit if you sell above your buying price or take a loss if you sell below where you entered the market. You don’t have to sell all of your shares at once. For example, say you bought 100 shares of ABC at $3 a share. After moving up to $4.50, you decide that you want to take some money off the table to so you sell 50 shares, netting you a profit of $50×1.50 or $75(less commission fees). You’ve made money on this transaction and you’re still in the market if it goes higher, or can purchase more stock at a later date.
