Flirty & sexy, labels including Christian Lacroix, Roberto Cavalli, Dior and Intimissimi experience periodic backorder chaos as the appetite to enhance the burgeoning population of already mind bending beauties grows. International boutique Agent Provocateur and home grown Russian high end retailer Wild Orchid, which represents several international labels, say business has never been better and in fact have opened additional locations to service heightened demand for the teasing tangibles.
The word lingerie derives from the French for washables “linge”, and refers to the range of intimate apparel from the eroticized to the practical and which today’s men have come to cherish and adore…Babydolls, Basques, Bodystocking, Bodices, Boy shorts, Brassieres, Bustiers, Camisoles, Cheekies, French Maids, G-Strings, Garters, Negligees, Tangas (or Thongs) and Teddys, Playsuits and Stockings including Thigh Highs in everything from Italian silk and French lace, polyester and rayon from China and fine leather and animal skins from Russia. The concept of lingerie as visually appealing was also a French development
of the later 1800′s.
Meeting the 21st century head-on, the lingerie industry expanded with designs that double as outerwear, or rather something in between. The French say ‘dessous-dessus’ which essentially means “innerwear as outerwear”. Premiere corsetiere Paris’ House of Cadolle pushes the bustier-corset as a sort of visible body art to the highest end purveyers around the world including those in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Odessa.
The intimate apparel boutique Faire Frou Frou (means “show it off”), encourages this fashion by promoting lingerie as a statement having details such as layered straps and lace trim exposed and shown to compliment one’s outerwear.
The Russians have always had an affinity for French culture and so naturally adopted the frilly, lusty Gallic creations along with its potential for naughty fun. With the fall of the Soviet Union, Russian women, who seem to prefer bolder more suggestive styles, now have not only more choice in vehicles to help entice their lovers, but also a new channel for the expression of their dynamic sexuality.
