Using Stock Footage in your next project
Many productions use stock footage. In fact, most films use stock footage that you have seen in several other films. It is not uncommon for the same piece of footage to be reused in films. Most Hollywood big budget films purchase their stock footage through large stock libraries such as Sony Studios’ or Getty. Big agencies such as those offer their footage through something called a ‘Rights Managed’ license. Rights Managed licenses depend a lot on the audience that will view a project and the reach it has. The more people that will see the work, the more expensive that piece of footage will cost to license.
That is why for a smaller production, it is more reasonable to look for ‘Royalty Free’ licensed stock footage. Austex Footage, an Austin, Texas Stock Footage firm is a much smaller stock footage firm compared to Sony or Getty, but their footage also costs less to license. What is special about a royalty free license is that you only pay once. There is a flat fee to license that footage regardless of where you will use it and how many times you will use it. That is why agencies such as Austex Footage and countless other royalty free firms are appealing to indie filmmakers now days.
So if your next project has a big budget, then royalty free may offer you some more options with rights managed footage, but with the increase in royalty free footage, there may not be as big of an advantage in purchasing a rights managed license anymore.
