How Does the Stock Market Work ?
How Does the Stock Market Work is a question that is frequently asked in Internet forums. The question seems simple enough but the answer is slightly more complex.
If the questioner simply wants an explanation of the principle behind the stock market then tht is simple enough to explain. The stock market is a just like any other market. In a market there are people who buy things e.g. bananas and people who buy things e.g. bananas. If there are not very many good quality bananas for sale then the price will go up, if there are too many bananas for sale then the price will go down.
This applies to the stock market too. The things being sold are ‘stocks’ also called ‘shares’. These stocks and shares are a share of the company, so if a company has issued 100 shares and you have 1 then you own 1 per cent of the company. This means that you will get 1 per cent of any profits that are distributed amongst the shareholders.
This is the simple explanation. The share price will go up and down depending on how many people want to buy them, just like an auction, if there are lots of buyers then the price will go up,if there are no buyers then the price will need to come down until some buyers can be found.
The more complicated explanation of how the stock market works, however, will have to take into account the forces behind the stock market. People like hedge fund managers who have hundreds of millions of dollars at their disposal. Such people can use their money to influence the prices of stocks. If they continually sell stocks they don’t have (yes that does exist, it is perfectly legal and is called ‘shorting’) then they can drive the price of a share down then buy it back at a much lower price than what they paid for it. This is what happened during 2007 and 2008 when stock market manioulators drive prices down.
In order to get the prices down even faster, they can also circulate rumours (either true or invented) about companies. This is illegal but it happens all the time. These are the people whoreally know how the stock market works, becaus they are the ones that make it work the way they want it too !
Jim Cramer explains in his video – How Does the Stock Market Work – some of the tricks that market manipulators employ. How does he know ? Because he used to be one of them, and may stil be for all I know.
Who benefitted most from the stock market crash ? Goldman Sachs as it saw a number of its competitors completely wiped out. There are people who maintain that this was not accidental and that the whole recent stock market fiasco was planned by Goldman Sachs from the outset. I have no way of knowing of course of that is true but hey wouldn’t you eliminate your competitors if you could ?
One way of knowing what the markets are likely to do is by learning about stock market charts and technical analysis. Chartists maintain that the news always comes out in the charts first so a basic understanding of stock charts for beginners is essential
