Before we move on the stock market and the various ways in which the market has been behaving of late, we need to understand what are the experts saying and what exactly they mean about the things going on .
Well, one such term that is often flaunted by experts, brokers and the mutual fund dealers is the Stock Portfolio.
Portfolio is basically a matrix of stocks and the various sectors they belong to.
The companies can be clustered according to various industrial sectors that they tend to represent. Stock portfolio has its origin in the school of thought that one needs to diversify to minimize risk. Now this is debatable topic but it is often the case with mutual funds. There are mutual funds which take money from the people and then put in to the market with a view of giving good returns to them over a period of a year or so.
They try to own the blue-chip companies as well as some of the fast growing companies.
Thus they tend to create a lot of sector specific portfolios. Some tend to mark their portfolio to the index and then try to have a particular weightage of each sector in that portfolio.
It does not mean that only mutual funds or hedge funds have a portfolio, even an average investor can have a portfolio of his own where he has taken decision of investing in particular sector of industry and then use it for the clear understanding and tracking of each shares price over a period of time.
