DIB Solutions Positive On Asian Healthcare Prospects

In a briefing to shareholders, DIB Solutions said the number of people seeking treatment at hospitals in South East Asia, notably Singapore (the regions healthcare hub) look to climb in 2009, overcoming two quarters of patient declines as the global economy recovers, in a move which bodes well for the outlook of certain healthcare stocks.

In the emailed briefing, DIB Solutions said that early data suggested that the industry is coming out of the depths and that July and Augusts numbers look likely to be an improvement on those from last year, stating that if the momentum continues, 2009 numbers should top those of 2008.

The DIB Solutions release attributes part of the growth to the drive by Asia-based healthcare companies to attract patients from Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Saudi Arabia for procedures such as cancer treatment and organ transplants. Furthermore, DIB Solutions highlighted the growing demand for services in India and China, coupled with likely expansion plans of healthcare giants such as Parkway in these regions, as further sources of revenue growth.

Parkway stock has surged 65% this year to-date and second-quarter net income excluding exceptional items climbed 8 percent to S$30.1 million ($21 million), as increasing revenue from hospitals in Malaysia, China and India offset declining sales at home, Parkway said Aug. 13.

Revenue from its Singapore operations dropped 1 percent in the three-month period as foreign patients deferred traveling to the nation for surgery amid the global economic slowdown, after contracting 4 percent in the first quarter, Lim said. Admissions at the company’s hospitals in Singapore fell 3.8 percent in 2008.

A source within DIB Solutions confirmed the content of the briefing, stating that, with respect to the healthcare sector in the region, private admissions are starting to stabilize and are recovering faster than in previous recessions.
