Alcoa sales are underestimates, US stock index futures decline – CFD and Spread Betting News

The US earning season has commenced, but results from Alcoa have fallen below the estimates of analysts, it has been reported.
Alcoa – the largest producer of aluminium in the US – revealed that high costs relating to raw materials and energy curbed its potential profit.
Continuing operations income stood at $309 million (£189 million) for the first quarter of 2011, which is its best performance since the second quarter of 2008.
It marks a rally of a fifth on the fourth quarter of 2010. Its mid and downstream businesses also enjoyed record profits.
However, Bloomberg noted that its sales were less than analysts expected and following the announcement, US stock index futures retreated.
Although they rallied by 22 per cent to stand at more than $5.9 billion, a Bloomberg poll of analysts had placed sales at an average $6.06 billion.
As of 08:53 BST in London today (April 12th), June contracts on the Standard and Poor’s 500 Index fell by 0.4 per cent, while those on the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by the same amount, the news resource stated.
Meanwhile, futures on the Nasdaq-100 Index lowered by 0.3 per cent.
