In part 3 of our series we learnt the two major theories of investing: Value and Growth. Hopefully you got an understanding of both of them. We also covered some pointers for successful share picking but yet we really haven’t got into any of the technicals have we?
In this extended part we’ll be covering terms such as EPS, Trading Volume, Mutual Fund holdings, Sales, Net Profit Margin, PE Ratio and all the other terms that you’ve been shying away from for quite some time.
EPS – What is EPS? How does EPS relate to selecting good stocks?
- EPS or Earnings per Share, is a stock market formula that determines the portion of a company’s profit allocated to each outstanding share of common stock. Earnings per share serves as an indicator of a company’s profitability.
In simple terms, EPS helps us break down the company’s net earnings into each share. The formula for this is
A very simple example: Say a company has net earnings of 1000, dividends of 100 and average outstanding shares amount to 50.
The EPS would work out to: 1000-100 = 900/50 = 18
:. EPS = 18! Very simple indeed!
Now that you know exactly how to calculate EPS, you must be thinking:
How do I decide if an EPS number is good or not?
Well there’s a very easy way to do this and not only easy but it will help you lifelong in picking those incredible stocks!
Here’s exactly what you should be doing for every stock you analyze from now on:
- Measure a share’s current EPS
- Compare the current EPS to the last 2 or 3 recent quarters
- Then, compare the recent quarters to the same quarters of last year, keep doing so until you have the trend of the last 3 years
- Now compare the EPS trend to that of other stocks in the same sector, see if your selected stock is on top and if not, which stock is on top?
- Analyze all the data carefully to arrive at the EPS winner.
