What is a Dividend?

A dividend is a company’s profit that gets distributed among its shareholders. This is money that the company could reinvest with but instead gives it to its shareholders as a great benefit for investing in the company. Investing in a stock that gives dividends is a good way to make guaranteed income. A company usually gives out its dividends at the business quarter (every three months) after they have calculated profits. Many people shy away from companies that give dividends because of the fact that they give dividends. The reason for this is that they believe that the company will have a slower growth due to not reinvesting its profits.

The amount of dividend money you will receive is set at a dollar amount per share. For example, let’s say you own 100 shares of a company and that company decides to pay out 25 cents per share. Every three months you will get a check worth $25 (25 cents x 100 shares). With a dividend reinvestment program the shareholder can actually receive the dividend in stock instead of cash. Each month the shareholders dividend will be worth more and more and they will then be able to buy more stock. The next value of dividend would then be worth more than $25 because the shareholder now owns more stock.

Many people invest this way because of the steady growth and guaranteed income. Over time their investment will grow due to each quarterly check being bigger and bigger. You can look at a company’s investing information to find out if and how much dividend they pay. It’s always a good idea to know if the company you wan to invest in is handing out dividends or not.
