How to install a composite door
You’ve decided on a composite front door, good choice, so what’s next? It’s important to buy from a trusted manufacturer for a start and a good indication of this is usually to see what choice they offer, what customer reviews are like and how established they are. If the choice of stock is small or their customer service is poor it’s probably worth shopping around for someone more professional.
Once you’ve found a company you trust that’s local to you and decided on the door that matches your tastes, the style of your house and your budget, it’s time to decide whether you want to have it fitted or if you’d rather take it in hand and fit it yourself. This obviously depends a lot on how confident you are with such tasks, whether you’ve got time and also if you’d rather just have it delivered and fit it at a convenient time rather than having to wait in for a professional.
If you go for the DIY option, here are a few handy tips on how to correctly fit and hang your new composite front door. A good composite door company will provide you with a full set of instructions and a DIY DVD to guide you through the process but the basics include the following steps.
Step one
Measure your door space using a proper tape measure, making sure you measure the inside of the door space. Don’t forget to measure the height as well as the width and write down your measurements so you don’t forget them or remember them wrongly. All composite door companies will need accurate measurements in order to make sure the door you order will fit the space and the best companies will offer tips or even a demonstration video on measuring your door.
Step two
Once your door has been delivered, make sure you’ve got enough time to take down your existing door and put up a new door. This is not a project that you can leave and come back to because your home will not be secure in the meantime so set aside a few hours, if it only takes you 20 minutes then you’ll have some nice spare time to enjoy!
Step three
Remove your existing front door and make sure you clean the remaining area thoroughly, it’s a good chance to make sure there are no damp or mould issues to address. It’s time to follow that instructional DVD which will tell you exactly what to do but remember that fitting a composite door is easy even for those who are only confident with basic DIY.
